Getting started
Opening & files
- Make Unmarked your default Markdown appSet Unmarked as the default app for .md files on your Mac with Finder's Get Info, so every Markdown file opens in Unmarked on a double-click.
- How to open a Markdown file on MacOpen a Markdown file on Mac in Unmarked three ways: double-click it in Finder, use Open (⌘O), or drag it onto the app. Files open in place.
- Open Markdown files made in other appsUnmarked opens standard Markdown files made in other editors, in place. No import, no conversion.
- Which file types Unmarked opensUnmarked opens .md, .markdown, .mdown, .mkd, and plain .txt files, reading each as Markdown. It supports CommonMark plus GitHub extensions.
Reading & writing
- Change the theme in UnmarkedPick one of five Unmarked themes in Settings (⌘,) under Appearance, then choose System, Light, or Dark. The theme applies to both Read and Write.
- Check off task-list itemsTask-list checkboxes in Unmarked are interactive. In Read mode, click a box to tick or untick it and the change saves to the file. In Write mode, press ⌘L.
- Read, Write, and Split modesUnmarked has three modes: Read shows the finished document, Write shows clean source, Split shows both. Press ⌘E to toggle Read and Write.
- Set your reading and writing fontsSet the font, text size, line spacing, and width for Reading and Writing separately in Unmarked's Settings (⌘,). Read in serif, write in mono if you like.
- Use the outline sidebarThe outline sidebar in Unmarked lists every heading in your Markdown document, nested by level. Click a heading to jump straight to it, no scrolling.
- Word count and reading timeUnmarked shows a live word count and an estimated reading time in the status bar, updating as you type.
Markdown in Unmarked
- Frontmatter shown as a properties panelUnmarked reads YAML frontmatter at the top of a Markdown file and shows it as a clean two-column properties panel, with humanized key names. Keep or strip it on export with one toggle.
- Render Mermaid diagrams in UnmarkedWrite a Mermaid code block and Unmarked draws it as a diagram in Read mode: flowcharts, sequence diagrams, and more, rendered on your Mac and offline.
- What Markdown Unmarked rendersThe full list of Markdown Unmarked renders: CommonMark plus GitHub tables, task lists, strikethrough, and YAML frontmatter, with what's not supported yet.
- What Unmarked does not render yetFootnotes and math show as plain text in Unmarked for now. Nothing is lost; the same file renders correctly the day support ships. Plus where remote images fit.
Exporting & sharing
- Copy as rich text, Markdown, or HTMLCopy Markdown as clean formatted text for Mail, Slack, Docs, or Notion, with no syntax symbols. Unmarked also copies the raw Markdown or an HTML snippet.
- Export Markdown to self-contained HTMLExport Markdown to HTML in Unmarked: one self-contained file with the CSS and images baked in, ready to email or upload — or minimal markup you can style yourself.
- Export a Markdown file to PDFExport a Markdown file to PDF in Unmarked with control over the page: Letter or A4, margins, landscape, page numbers, and a running header. Real pagination, built on your Mac.
- Export Markdown to Word (.docx)Export Markdown to a real, editable .docx in Unmarked: built-in Word heading styles that drive the outline pane, plus genuine Word lists, tables, links, and embedded images.
- Print a Markdown filePrint a Markdown file on Mac with Unmarked: press ⌘P. Print uses the same renderer as PDF export, so the paper matches your screen. No printer? Save as PDF.
Privacy & your files
- How Unmarked keeps your files privateUnmarked has no network access at all: no analytics, no account, no cloud. It edits the file you open in place, and nothing is uploaded or copied.
- Where your edits are saved in UnmarkedUnmarked autosaves as you type, writing straight back to the file you opened. No Save button, no unsaved state, no hidden copies. New docs save once to get a name.
- Why remote images show as alt textUnmarked has no network access, so an image linked from a web URL shows its alt text. Images stored next to your file render in every mode and export.
